Science Photography Contest Produces Outstanding Photos

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has recently announced the winners of its science photography prize. There were entrants from around the world. Prizes were awarded in several different categories along with one overall winner.

The overall winner of the contest was David Nadlinger who is currently studying at Oxford University. His winning photograph was entitled, “Single Atom in an Ion Trap.” Mr. Nadlinger’s photo is quite amazing in that it captured an atom allowing it to be viewed by the naked eye without special microscopic aids.

Mr. Nadlinger captured the image using a DSLR camera that utilized a special lens designed to provide extremely close views of objects. He placed the camera near the window of a vacuum chamber. Within the chamber there were two electrodes. The electrodes trapped a strontium atom between them, and then light from a laser was used to illuminate the suspended atom.

In the contest’s Eureka and Discovery category, a student from Imperial College of London named Li Shen took home top honors. Li Shen was able to photograph the microscopic construction of the interior of a soap bubble. This photograph has stunning colors in a variety of purple, yellow and blue shades.

Another Imperial College of London student, Bernice Akpinar, won first prize in the contest’s Weird and Wonderful category. Ms. Akpinar was able to photograph the structure of a butterfly wing. The photo shows the wing’s lattice structure and how the interwoven pattern produces color in the wing.

Finally, Estelle Beguin won first prize in the Innovation category. She was able to take a photo of a micro-encapsulated bubble. These bubbles are often used as a means of drug delivery.

Jason Hope; Inspiring Hope in the Anti-aging Research

Many people have developed an interest in the research on anti-aging. One of them is Jason Hope, a successful entrepreneur, investor, futurist, and philanthropist. His interest in anti-aging research has added another aspect to his futuristic tag. Just like his second name, Jason hopes that scientists will get a solution that will slow the rate of aging. In particular, the Arizona native supports research on combating diseases such as lung disease, Alzheimer’s, and heart diseases affect the different functions of the body. With time, the diseases lead to a complete shut-down of the body. According to Jason Hoppe, conventional medicine focuses on treatment rather than finding the real cause and prevention of such diseases.

In light of this, Jason provides financial and ethical support to the SENS Research Foundation. The foundation has in the recent years been active in anti-aging studies. According to Jason, SENS has adopted a unique approach that focuses on finding a cure for diseases that increase the rate of aging. It explains why he is one of the most significant contributors to SENS’ activities. The foundation’s network consists of esteemed researchers, private individuals, and philanthropists.

Jason donated $500,000 to the SENS Research Foundation. He appreciates the commitment of the California-based foundation in development and access to rejuvenation biotechnologies which deal with age-related diseases. Aubrey de Grey, CSO of SENS said that the donation would fund studies on the pharmacological breaking of unwanted molecular bonds and restoration of elasticity to the body.

Indeed, donations from philanthropists like Jason will help in coming up with solutions to various medical issues. He gave another donation of $1 million for further research. The funds will enable the foundation set up a laboratory in Cambridge. The remainder will be used in starting a new research program. Although Jason is a businessman, his contributions to SENS are purely for philanthropic purposes.

For many people, their new year’s resolution is to lose a few pounds and get physically fit for the summer. The only problem is that there are many health misconceptions that people implement that get them worse results than before. Some of these include dropping your calories too much, dirty bulking, and other diet and fitness related things. However, I’m going to make this article very simple. There are really only three things that you need to focus on to get fit. These three things are your diet, your workout, and how much you sleep. We’re going to be breaking down these three things in this article. Let’s get started!

1. Diet
Diet is by far the most important factor when getting into shape. If your diet is horrible, you won’t put on muscle nor will you lose fat. If your goal is to put on muscle, consume 300-500 calories above maintenance. If you’re goal is to lose weight, eat 300-500 calories below maintenance. It really is that simple. Track your weight by weighing yourself every morning. At the end of the week, average those weights and set a weekly goal from there. It really doesn’t matter what you eat as long as you are hitting your macros and calories.

2. Workout
Your workout is the second most important factor when getting into shape. Make sure that your lifts and exercises correlate with the type of results you want. If you’re goal is to lose weight, incorporate high intensity cardio into your workout routine. If you want to see strength gains, try the 5×5 program. For muscle growth, perform 8-12 reps each set for maximum hypertrophy. Hypertrophy is what leads to muscle growth and this rep range is the most optimal. Also, focus on compound movements as these provide better results.

3. Sleep
If you’re not getting enough sleep, you won’t give your body enough time to rebuild. As a result, cortisol levels will shoot up, protein synthesis will go down, and you’ll stay out of shape. In the end, try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night and keep your sleeping schedule fairly consistent.

2018 Underwater Photographer of the Year

The awards for the 2018 Underwater Photographer of the Year have just been announced. Well over 5,000 photographers entered the contest. The main rule of this particular contest was that at least a portion of whatever was in the photograph entered had to be submerged under the water. There was an overall winner announced, and there were also prizes given to photographers in a number of separate categories.

The overall winner of the contest was a photographer from Germany named Tobias Friedrich. Mr. Friedrich took a photo he named “Cycle War”. The photo was taken off of the Egyptian coast. The photo captured an image of a ship called the SS Thistlegorm. On the boat is a shipping crate with three Norton motorcycles resting side by side. The motorcycles are completely covered in algae, but the outline of each of the cycles is clearly visible.

Grant Thomas was the winner of the prize recognizing the British Underwater Photographer of the Year. Mr. Thomas took a photo that shows two swans with their necks intertwined. The pairs’ heads are visible underneath the water feeding on the underwater vegetation.

One of the most stunning photographs to win an award won the prize in the portrait category. The winning photographer, Tanya Houppermans, captured a photo of a sand shark swimming vertically in the water. The underside of the shark is captured, but what makes the photo so fantastic is that all around the shark as it swims are hundreds of very small fish. The little fish are swimming in such a way that they frame the shark within the photograph.

Some of the other award winners featured photos of humpback whales swimming underwater, and one photo captured a bear with his snout below the water attempting to capture a salmon. The winner in the black and white category featured a crocodile floating under the waters off the coast of Cuba.

How to Hit Your Goals

Many people have tremendous trouble hitting their daily, short term, and long term goals. Two major reasons for this are discipline and consistency. Discipline and consistency are arguably the most important factors that dictate the results we see throughout our life. For example, a lifter who is disciplined to maintain a healthy diet, consistently go to the gym four times a week, a is consistent with their sleeping will most likely get great results. In this article, I’m going to be breaking down how you can stay consistent and disciplined no matter how big the goal. Let’s get started!

1. The Power List
The Power List is a basically a list of 5 daily things that you must get done for that day to consider your day a success. These can be micro goals leading you to a short term or long term goal. For example, one daily goal could be to go to the gym every day or stick to a specific diet. In the end, these daily micro commitments will add up overtime and allow you to achieve your massive goal. It’s all about breaking down the goal into manageable, daily tasks.

2. Visualize and use Affirmations
Many people lack clarity when they are goal setting. They don’t exactly know what it is they want. Because of this, they can’t build the consistency and discipline needed to go after these goals. Then again, it’s hard to really have faith in something if you don’t know it exists. To combat this, visualize reaching that goal every night before going to bed. Also, write the goal down multiple times so that it’ll sink into your subconscious mind. When it’s in the subconscious mind, your brain will naturally gravitate towards actions that will achieve that goal. These positive affirmations work wonders.

3. Think Big
Most of us never get off of the couch because our goals are to small. To combat this, 10X your current goal. By multiplying your goal by ten, it will make your current goal look like a walk in the ballpark and you’ll be more likely to reach it because you’re actively striving for better.

How to Increase Income

Many Americans today are still living paycheck to paycheck even though our economy is booming and hitting record highs. How can this be? In one of the greatest wealth building time periods ever, why is most of the population still broke? Most of this has to do with the value they provide for society. If all you can do is flip burgers, you’ll be paid what your worth. However, there is more opportunity than ever before to go out into the marketplace and create wealth on your own. In this article, we’re going to be breaking down how you can increase your income and build wealth in the long run. Let’s get started!

1. Learn a valuable skill
Most of us are already good at some skill that we just never knew the market wanted. Whether it’s personal training, consulting small businesses, dog walking, lawn mowing, or learning code, there are many skills out there that one could learn that the marketplace would love to compensate you for. First, identify any valuable skills that you already know. If you don’t have any, find one that you’d enjoy. Whether it’s freelance writing, photography, coding, or stock trading, you can learn to create more value into the marketplace and get compensated for it.

2. Market that skill
People can’t buy from you if they don’t know you exist. First, set up a website that goes into detail about the service that you provide. Then, use social media to get your goods or service in front of your target audience. You can create Facebook pages, Instagram influencer pages, and YouTube videos to get engagement and attention around your service. Once people know you and trust you, they’ll be more likely to purchase from you.

3. Scale your skill
This step is more complex but can dramatically impact your business. You can run Facebook ads and optimize your site for SEO to ultimately get more traffic. The Facebook ads will generate leads and the organic traffic will drive people to your site. If you capture these leads, they will become hot traffic that you can ultimately market to later.

How to Get Jacked

Many men are looking to obtain M for this upcoming summer. However, there are many misconceptions about how to build muscle obtain a muscular physique. A lot of men fall into the health magazine trap, taking countless supplements and eating weird diets only to look in the mirror and not see any progress. The good news is that building muscle is quite simple. The steps that I’m going to show you are quite easy to implement into any lifestyle. Let’s get started!

1. Diet
In order for your body to build muscle, it has to be in a caloric surplus. In other words, you have to be taking in more calories than your body can burn. To find out how many calories to take in, go to an online calorie calculator and find your maintenance calories. Then, add 300-500 calories per day to that calculation. For example, if my body needs 3500 calories per day to maintain its current body weight, I should then consume 3800-4000 calories per day. Track your results by weighing yourself every morning and by averaging those seven weights at the end of the week. A good goal is to gain one pound per week especially for newbies. If you’re not gaining weight, bump up the calories. Also, make sure you are hitting your macronutrients like protein, carbs, and fats.

2. Workout
Your workout should primarily consist of compound movements such as deadlifts, shoulder press, bench press, and squats for these exercises incorporate the most muscle groups which will lead to better results. Also, perform these exercises in the 8-12 rep range as this will maximize hypertrophy and optimize muscle growth. I usually do a 4 day split with legs, chest, back, and shoulders being my main muscle groups for those days.

3. Sleep
Sleep is very important because its the one thing your body needs to actually build muscle. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your body can’t rebuild itself and you won’t see much progress. To keep it simple, try to sleep 7-8 hours per night and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
