How to Spot a Retouched Photo

Photo retouching is something you’ll find done to many pictures, particularly those uploaded to social media, used as headshots, and for important engagements. People have various opinions of retouching photos. Some people are perfectly fine, if the changes are subtle. Some people flat out hate the idea of retouching a photo in any way, and there are even people who don’t mind if you retouch a photo simply because you’re bored. No matter where you stand on the issue, it is important that you know the signs that identify a retouched photo so you can easily identify the real from the fake at a moment’s notice.

Photo retouching is something that is done to a photo to enhance appearance. Most often, it is used by women looking to slim their nose, or men who want the beer gut gone, at least if only in a photo. Of course, many other people use retouching software to enhance the look of their photos, and they do so with various reasons directing them to the task. Maybe you’ve even used a retouching software on a photo (or two) in the past. Many people are using the software, making it even more important to know the signs of a fake!

Unless the person using the retouching, software has formal training or a lot of experience, you will likely notice many things ‘off’ in the picture. Is her arm really that shape? Is the sunshine an odd shape? These are subtle things that might be ‘off’ that indicate a retouched photo. Other signs of retouching include:

– Light and shade that do not correspond with one another

– It is a photo from a stock company or one found easily on the web

– The photo looks distorted

– The photo is poor quality

Simple Products To Be Like A Professional Photographer

There is a simple thing like a cell phone lens that can be used for increasing the clarity of photos. It can be easily clipped on and hence will take stable photos. Besides, the lens helps to expand shots and reduces glare too.

It is perfect for taking photos of small objects. The macro lens that is attached to a phone can help to take good photos in an instant. The quality can be as good as taking photos from a DSLR camera.

There should be a complete lighting setup. This will ensure that there is always a perfect glow. This is enough for a person to be a professional photographer while being at home. There is no need to have a studio. Just having a good lighting setup is good enough. It should be easy to set up. It must be fast to take down too. There must be a secure case for keeping the bulbs too. These bulbs should be able to cool down fast. There should be the optimum light that can combat shadows. This way the faces could be well lit-up for portraits.

There can be a selfie stick that can be easily transformed into a tripod. This will help in taking stable shots each time. It should be compact enough to be carried around while traveling. There can be a camera tripod too. This way the photos will always be centered in a perfect manner. It should be robust, yet lightweight so that it is easy to carry around.

Another product is a cell phone lens. It can be attached to a mobile phone. This will help to take a focused picture.

It is best to have a compact digital camera. This way high-quality photos can be taken without carrying around a big, bulky, DSLR camera.

Emerging Photography trends in 2017

Did you know that Dilish Parekh from Mumbai holds the Guinness Book of Records for being the guy with the largest collection of cameras, he has 4,425 since 1977. Since then, for instance, the world of photography has evolved; we realize that there’s nothing so much different, but just going back to the basics.

The photography, especially in the advertising arena, has taken a brand new angle in 2017, with more trends expected to emerge as the year progresses. This dynamic nature of commercial photography is attributed to pressure from technological advancements and the need to remain relevant to the customers, by attracting their attention through the choice of images we use.

Recent BBC research indicated that the digital photography industry had a growth rate of 3.8% annually with an estimated value of over $100 billion by the end of the year 2017.

Top photography trends

The whole world economy is dynamic, so as photography industry. Below are some of the advancements in this industry, which has inspired huge changes in the way we take our photos.

• Use of flash- use of camera flash is gaining traction this year. Flash enables you to get the balance right by eliminating blown-out highlights. Correct balance creates a feeling of reality

• Use of tattoos- tattoos are gaining popularity, especially with the commercial agencies. They just hire a model with tattoos to save time rather than having an airbrushed one

• Use of black and white- monochrome is making a serious comeback in 2017. Monochrome enables adverts to carry bright colored logos and texts.

• Less editing- they say is more or at least less is more.

• No posing- models are now being directed to take natural positions and get real

It is clear that the year 2017 will be a year to watch out. More real things are coming up, and even people are going back to back in the days when all you had was a disposable camera. Photography has always been the store for memories. And memories are real feelings, people, and places.

Photographer Who Created Celebrity Personas

If there is one photographer who has defined celebrity personas down the years, it has to be none other than Mick Rock. He has gone ahead and captured the very essence of all the major celebrities you can think of-Bowie, Daft Punk, Lady Ga Ga, Snoop and so many more. It is not as if it is only interesting celebrities that he captures with his lens.

In his own words, he can get something good from the most boring person. To him, it is the relationship between the subject and the camera that is of any value to him not who the subject might be. But for the superstars themselves getting a picture taken by Mick Rock is very important as it signifies that they have arrived.

Among the early brushes with celebrity, subjects came courtesy his interactions with Pink Floyd founder Syd Barret and David Bowie, who in fact had invited him over to his house in 1972. Since then he has gone on to make a hundred album covers. Quite naturally he has many an anecdote to reveal about the decades he has spent photographing some of the musical legends of our times.

The thing that was remarkable about Rock was the fact that even though he had photographed these legends even before they became the phenomena they became, he already saw them in that light. Not one to get carried away by his own fame, he rates his collection of cat photographs very highly indeed. One celebrity he would have loved to photograph was the supremely talented Prince. In his opinion, he wasn’t as culturally important as David Bowie was, but there was no doubt about the fact that Prince was a god of rock and roll.

The only advice that he would have given a younger himself would have been to grow up! That’s Mick Rock for you.

Wedding Photography Trends to Follow

A wedding day is one of the most special days in the lives of a couple, their families, and loved ones. Today there is a variety of techniques, specialized equipment, and original concepts for capturing these precious moments. Choose a photography style that is not so trendy that it will instantly date your wedding when you reminisce in years to come.

New York Photographer Danny Weiss says a growing trend he loves being a part of, is for the would-be groom to photograph the proposal. This captures the wonderful but fleeting moment so the couple can relive it later, and share it with their families. A beautiful locale and unique scenery help make this a popular new photo session a must-have.

Social media rules the times, and with it comes a trendy way for the new couple to experience their wedding through the eyes of their guests. Now couples are creating an Instagram hashtag for their guests to upload the photos they take of the day. Apps, such as Artifact Uprising, allow smartphone users to upload their pics and are given the option to create actual hardback printed books, calendars, and more with the photos.

Another hot and trendy way to bring the special day to life is with stop-motion wedding filming. Caroline Winata of Milou and Olin Photography has been working with this method. Caroline says she takes 10 to 20 still frames, animates them, and combines them into short trailer-style videos. This offers a cool and original way to share the event with others.

Lastly, a recently trending idea in wedding photography is to do day-after wedding shoots. This has become a popular request as generally the wedding day itself is so busy, and this allows for photos during the honeymoon to be included in the special memories.

Most Popular Photo Trends of the Year

As photography becomes more and more relevant to the millennial generation, certain trends naturally rise above others in popularity and preference. The internet and the development of social media outlets have virtually changed the way that people have interacted with one another for thousands of years and photography now has the ability to immerse individuals into new cultures, experiences, and walks of life. As the need for artistic, intellectually driven photography increases in modern countries, photography trends become more relevant even to those who do not work directly with the photography industry. In a recent article published by Forbes, a contributor walks readers through some of these photo trends and how they play an important role in the lives of many people.

Natural Design

The natural design concept involves the use of materials in nature to produce feelings of tranquility and peace in photography. This design has been seen on a regular basis in the social media campaigns of some of the leading commercial markets in the country. Major brands like Walmart/Sams and Target have both implemented the use of natural design in their photography to engage shoppers.

Global Views

The global view has also become prominent in photography within the last five years. Economists often say that the internet has produced a much smaller world and global views in photography trends remind people of that reality. When photographers shoot global images, like scenes from romantic Italy, vineyard covered Tuscany, or tropical rainforests in Tanzania, they enforce in the viewer the idea of global beauty.

Vivid, Colorful Shots

While black and white photography became a hot trend for a few years, vivid color is now dominating the photography industry. Across the social media spectrum, and particularly with photo focused sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, users can find images of perfectly captured color.

Moment Capture

Photographers are also engaging with moment capture in new and interesting ways. While it used to cost thousands of dollars to buy a camera that captured the perfect motion of water droplets falling from the sky, photo lovers can now capture these moments with the purchase of an iPhone.

Rib Cage Bragging Becomes New Photo Trend On Social Media

A Forbes photography contributor, Bruce Y. Lee, recently discovered that a photography trend called, “ribcage bragging” had recently taken over social media accounts like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. This trend has become especially popular with stars like Kourtney Kardashian and Rita Ora, and involves the manipulation of the body into poses that highlight a protruding ribcage and an utterly fit physique. The trend has become popularized by the hashtag system, with the tag #ribcage bragging becoming one of the most hashtags of the year. The photo trend has also become mainstream for average selfie takers who desire to boast about their ability to show their ribcages in photos.

Although this trend has become popular in the social media world, it has received criticism from several reputable news sources and from some social media users. In an Instagram post, Fernanda Familiar revealed her ribcage in a two piece bikini during a beach shoot. Many praised the model’s physique in the photo, while other Instagram users posted comments asking about the model’s eating habits and saying she looked unhealthy and unrealistic. Other stars have also received backlash for posting photos that accentuated their ribcages and many have complained that these stars are in the habit of setting unrealistic expectations for the general public.

Americans have, for the past few decades, been clamoring for celebrities to show a more realistic portrait of themselves than they typically have. There is a great desire among social media users to connect with celebrities on a human level and photo trends like ribcage bragging are not helpful to them in this pursuit. While the people who engage in this trend produce fantastic photos for social media sites, the general public wants to see photos that represent what they believe is a realistic feminine physique. Experts in photo trends do not expect the ribcage bragging hashtag to be long lived because of the reaction to the trend by the average social media users.

Photography Trends that Will Shape Up 2017

When predicting what’s going to shape up the year 2017, it’s important to look back at some of the trends that shaped up the previous year to forecast if they will still dominate or drop out. Here are just a few trends to look out for in 2017:

The minimalist fashion photography

Street wear is shaping up the looks and ruling the fashion world with fashion photographers now more concerned with the minimal images. The same goes for unretouched photos, which are now gaining in popularity with makeup looks and hair becoming more minimal as authentic aesthetic appeal grows in popularity. Given that more people are opting for realism and diversity, we should see fashion photography become more genuine and less contrived.

The chair

Getting its way in the 2016 photography trends, the humble chair is a trend worth taking advantage of. With the trend taking on the news feeds in 2016, it’s expected that the trends will still go on heading to 2017. Also, chair photos are a minimalist inspired trend that brings out the unnatural perfection of interior photos.

35mm Film

It’s no doubt that people are now getting into the analog kind of photography, and this is common in fine art photos and fashion shoots. It might be slightly expensive, but the 35mm is the best medium of choice for both emerging and established photographers.

Suburban America

Before the close of the year 2016, suburban seemed to take over the photography world. In the past year, the photography took a close insight into the dejected and dusty suburban areas of the American Midwest. The road trip has been an interesting niche for photographers, and it’s thought to shape a better part of 2017 with a close emphasis on pit stops. Also, abandoned homes, long empty roads, and sagging power lines should also feature as recurring themes.

Top Wedding Photography Trends of the Year

During wedding season every year, wedding photography trends become extremely important to engaged couples. Couples often want to express their unique personalities in engagement photos and they pay significant sums of money to ensure that these photos are truly representative of their new lives together. In a recent piece published by the New York Times, Alex Strauss discusses some of the prevalent new trends in wedding photography and some of them may be surprising.

Using iPhones and Apps to Replace Professional Photographers

For more and more engaged couples, high priced professional wedding photographers are becoming a thing of the past. Because photography generally takes up about a third of the entire wedding budget, millennial are opting to use photos taken by the audience through apps like Snapchat and Instagram to capture their big days.

Incorporating Instagram Themes

Lots of couples are also incorporating Instagram motifs in their wedding decor. Small signs outside the entrance of a wedding that tell guests which hashtag to use to tag the future newly weds make a nice treat for many guests. These signs also eliminate the need to search for many different tags when looking for the photos later.

Separate Bridal Shoots

Many new brides are opting to have their wedding shoots on a separate day than the actual wedding. This allows the photos to be taken with a more focus and less of the rushed feeling that often occurs when these photos are taken immediately after the wedding. Couples are also opting to take day-after couples photos to help the wedding flow smoothly.

Social Media Photo Booths

Social Media photo booths have become all the rage with the under 30 crowd. These booths allow guests to have a unique experience and document their wedding fun on Instagram!

Selfie Shots

Finally, selfie shots have become a favorite for newly engaged couples. Instead of having to wait months for professional photography to arrive, wedding guests that could not make it to the event are treated with a lovely selfie of the blushing bride and her new groom.
